5 AI Prompt Mistakes That Are Killing Your Results (And How to Fix Them)
By PromptWise Team
You’ve tried AI image generation. The results were… fine. Not terrible, not amazing. Just generic.
The problem isn’t the AI. It’s the prompt. Here are the five most common mistakes and exactly how to fix each one.
Mistake 1: Vague Descriptions
Bad prompt:
A beautiful landscape
What the AI hears: “Give me any landscape. I don’t care which one.”
Fixed prompt:
Dramatic granite mountain range at dawn, low clouds threading through valleys, foreground wildflower meadow of lupines and Indian paintbrush, Patagonia region, shot on Nikon Z9 with 24-70mm at 24mm, polarizing filter, Fuji Velvia color saturation
Why this works: AI models are trained on captioned images. Specific captions produce specific outputs. “Beautiful” means nothing to a model — describe what makes it beautiful.
Mistake 2: Contradictory Style Instructions
Bad prompt:
A photo of a person, illustration style, hyperrealistic, watercolor painting
What the AI hears: “Be four different things at once.” The model averages between them, producing muddy, inconsistent results.
Fixed prompt:
Hyperrealistic digital portrait with subtle watercolor texture overlay in the background
Pick ONE primary medium and style. If you want to blend, be explicit about which element gets which treatment.
Mistake 3: Too Many Subjects
Bad prompt:
A cat and a dog and a bird and a fish and a hamster playing together in a park with trees and a fountain and children and balloons
What the AI hears: “Generate 9 subjects with accurate spatial relationships.” Most models handle 1-3 subjects well. Beyond that, you get extra limbs, merged bodies, and spatial chaos.
Fixed prompt:
A golden retriever and a tabby cat sitting side by side on a park bench, the cat’s tail draped over the dog’s back, late afternoon sun, shallow depth of field
Fewer subjects + specific spatial relationships = dramatically better results.
Mistake 4: Quality Keyword Spam
Bad prompt:
8K, ultra HD, masterpiece, best quality, highly detailed, professional, award-winning, stunning, breathtaking, photorealistic
This was useful in 2023 with older models. Modern models like Flux Pro, Imagen 4, and Sora 2 don’t need quality boosters — they already generate at their maximum quality by default.
What to do instead: Replace quality keywords with specific quality markers:
- “visible fabric texture in clothing weave”
- “individual hair strands catching backlight”
- “subtle skin subsurface scattering”
- “accurate hand anatomy with five fingers”
Specificity beats superlatives. Every time.
Mistake 5: One Prompt, One Generation, Done
This is the biggest mistake of all. Professional AI creators don’t write one prompt and accept the first result.
The real workflow:
- Generate 4-8 variations
- Pick the best one
- Analyze what worked
- Refine the prompt based on what you see
- Regenerate
- Repeat until it’s right
The cost difference between generating 1 image and 20 images is trivial. The quality difference is massive. Most portfolio-worthy AI images are the result of 20-50 generations, not 1.
Bonus: Match Your Prompt to Your Model
Different models respond to different prompt styles:
- Flux Pro — detailed, technical prompts with specific parameters work best
- Imagen 4 — natural language descriptions, handles complex scenes
- Ideogram V3 — explicit text placement instructions for typography
- Recraft V3 — clean illustration-style descriptions
A prompt that produces amazing results in Flux might produce mediocre results in Imagen. In PromptWise, you can try the same prompt across all 9 models in seconds and compare.
